Egyptian-Italian Innovation and Technology Centers
In order to develop its industries and boost its competitiveness Egypt established 14 technology and innovation centers, 7 of them with Italy. The main purpose of these centers is to improve the quality of production and labor available. Thus far these centers have managed to provide support for 5,000 businesses and have turned out a new tier of young designers and innovators. These Egyptian-Italian centers have supported businesses in leather industries, leather tanning, marble and quarry mining, furniture manufacture, engineering, fashion and design, and jewel design.
Cultural Relations
Italy has contributed a great deal to the establishment of Alexandria Library.
An Italian university in Egypt will soon be opened, and 2009 declared the Egyptian-Italian Year of Science and Technology.
The 39th Cairo International Book Fair chose Italy as its Guest of Honor, where the Mediterranean Prize for Translation was launched. It is to be noted that 40 Italian publishers have participated.
Italy has participated with a number of movies in the 29th Cairo International Film Festival.
On 2008, two agreements were signed: the first for the protection and recovery of cultural property; the other for developing the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
In February 2009, an exhibition of sunken Egyptian antiquities was opened in Torino with 500 artifacts dating back to the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman eras showcased.
Egypt was Guest of Honor at the Torino International Book Fair held on May 14 to 18, 2009.
Tourism
10% of tourists visiting Egypt are Italian; the number reached one million tourists in 2009. Italy is ranked fourth in terms of the number of tourists visiting Egypt after Russia, Germany and England.
